Safety deposit boxes are one of the most secure ways to store your valuables. Their sole purpose is to protect and store valuable items for any given period of time, whether it’s short term while you’re away travelling or long term. Safety deposit boxes are ideal for anyone wanting to secure any valuables that don’t need to be frequently accessed and are available in a number of sizes.

Thinking of signing up for a safe deposit box? Check out this article on what you can store in a safety deposit box.

Why store your valuables in a safety deposit box?

Safety deposit boxes are the most secure form of storage and are usually stored within a bank vault or private vault. These facilities have multiple layers of security including individual access keys, separate guard keys, pin numbers, biometric scanning, staff and 24-hour surveillance protecting your valuables from fires, floods and earthquakes and reducing the risk of theft, tampering and hacking.

All safety deposit boxes come with their own unique set of keys for the customer only. These keys cannot be copied. Private vaults do not hold copies of customer keys, however, some bank vaults do in case a customer misplaces their key.

A safety deposit box is often insured as an extra layer of security either inclusive through a private vault company or as an extra under home and contents insurance. Some companies like Imperial Vaults offer complimentary insurance cover for up to $10,000 worth with the option to increase when requested.

What you cannot store in a safety deposit box

You should avoid storing any items in a vault that may need to be accessed regularly or in case of an emergency. This is because most bank vaults and private vaults are only open during regular business hours.

We recommend avoiding storing the only copy of important documents that may need to be accessed in an emergency such as medical directives, funeral and burial instructions, wills and emergency cash.

Items that aren’t allowed to be stored in a safety deposit box include any perishables, liquids, drugs or firearms.
